A Beautiful Song: Re-enchanting the Gospel with Objective Beauty in Worship
The news seems to be increasingly filled with reports of sabre rattling, political power posturing, aggressive aggrandizement both in privacy and the body politic, and in general, an attitude of self-serving superiority through abusive domination and even oppression. One way to break through the ugliness that militates against the faith is to re-enchant ourselves and the world with the objective beauty of God. Led by Jim Hart, President of the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies, we will begin to “scratch the surface” of understanding the role of objective beauty in worship.

Prayer Time based on the Names of Jehovah
I have selected 15 names for Jehovah and we simply pray through the names of the Lord.  It is really powerful and effective.
Its also the chapter in one of my new books.  My presentation will be an abbreviated portion of the first half of the chapter followed by the group praying through the names of Jehovah. (Like suggested in the book)   I hope it blesses you.  I use it with my classes every fall. We literally pray through the 15 names of Jehovah. Many years, it turns out to be the "favorite presentation" of my students. AND, in many cases, the students begin weeping during the middle of the presentation.  It is powerful.

God's Laws of Communications":AVL and Acoustics/promote engaging and high impact worship
God’s Laws of Communication is a study in the elemental physiology of worship focusing on
the cause and effect of today’s AVL and acoustics in the master planning of a total worship
environment. The underlying goal is to create an environment that will promote engaging
and high impact worship experiences for today’s congregations by understanding the base
line methodology of full sensory media design. Discovering the organic make up of how
people see, hear, and experience worship today, teaching how to use “next generation
technology” to deliver the message and word of God in a way that is both dynamic and life
changing and understanding the basic building blocks of worship communication that will
impact 21 st century congregations. Learning Objective #1:
The physics of worship: How to use modern tools of communication to design a relevant
worship experience and understanding how to hear, see, and experience in the space we are
in.
Learning Objective #2
Growing your ministry through modern tools of communication
Learning Objective #3 Building design for modern worship: How architecture and building materials affect
contemporary worship
Learning Objective #4
Psycho acoustic speaker system and worship design: the different types of speaker design
being used with success in modern worship facilities today and how to enhance the worship
experience by effective design and how room acoustics affect your organization

Technology and Christian Formation
“We shape our tools and then our tools shape us” (~James Culkin). All that we do in worship contributes to the spiritual and theological formation of our congregations. But what about technology in particular? How do the tools we use form, malform, or transform us? In an increasingly high-tech world, how do we exercise wisdom and discernment in our reliance upon technology? This session will consider the pastoral, biblical, and theological implications of these questions and more.

Helping Disciples Become Worshipers and Worshipers Become Disciples
Worship is a natural response of the human heart when it encounters the sacred. Nevertheless, the extensive teaching of the Scriptures on worship as well as the many examples we find there reveal the importance of instruction in right and wrong ways to approach God. While in our Christian churches today the responsibility of instruction is carried mostly by the Senior Pastor (and pastoral staff), the worship leaders role has more to do with training. Is it possible for us to provide training that will promote the transformation that God is working in the lives of his people?

Where Do We Go from Here?...I Peter 5
Taken from the teaching of I Peter 5, this chapter deals with the principles of Preparation for long term ministry. Using Peter’s admonishment to allow the Holy Spirit to perfect, establish, strengthen and settle worshipers for service, a five-fold program for worship is articulated: Worship is Formational, Worship is Transformation, Worship is Relational, Worship is Missional, and Worship is Reproducible.

Common Acoustical Issues for Houses of Worship and How to Solve Them
Arguably, the single most important goal of any worship service is to communicate the message. What if the congregation couldn’t understand the words of that amazing sermon due to excessive echo? What if they aren’t moved by the music because they are distracted by how harsh or loud the room sounds? In many churches, the acoustical environment can be the difference between someone receiving the message or leaving unfulfilled.  Room acoustics can either assist you with communicating the message or become an obstacle. Many people think they are “stuck” with bad acoustics, but there are several affordable ways to enhance a room’s natural acoustics. Come learn about common acoustical problems in houses of worship and how to solve them!

The Art of Worship Through Technology
Why use technology in worship?
ART – Defined as:
something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses
important ideas or feelings
-Merriam- Webster Dictionary
How can the church use this to reach their community?
Technologies are an effective way to create art in worship. They help create a visual impact
that words alone may not communicate. They engage the congregation and encourage
participation. Technology uses new ways to talk about an old message.
4 Steps in Incorporating Technology as Art into Worship:
- Dismissal:
- Turning worship into entertainment / Fits in with style of worship
- Affordability
- Embracing:
-Bringing technologies into worship
-Enhancing worship experience; not taking away from main purpose
- Putting worship first
- What Works for OUR Congregation?
- Our church vision
- Best ways to communicate with technology
- Growing the church
- Putting it to work:- Designing the best technology for your congregation
- Creating worthy material
- Be intentional
Learning Objective #1
Participation Rather Than Observation
- Song lyrics
- Sermon outlines
- Photographic illustrations
Learning Objective #2
Engaging Visual & Audio People
- Attractive to the eye
- Pleasing to the ear
- Appealing to the mind
- Fun
Learning Objective #3
Environmental Changes
-Lighting design techniques: Color, intensity, and direction can be used to achieve
focus for your Pastor
- TV or broadcast lighting
- Production or concert lighting
- Drama or theatrical lighting

Learning Objective #4
High Tech Worship
- Video Projection
- Rear
- Front
- Screen size
- Shades, blinds, and windows
- Contrast ration & lumins

Gospel Music and Contemporary Worship; What Can They Learn From Each Other?
A Conversational Workshop Hosted by John J. Thompson and featuring Eddie DeGarmo (Industry Leader, Artist, Songwriter,) Nicole C. Mullen, (Artist, Songwriter,) Tricia Alicia (Independent Artist and Worship Leader,) Benita Washington (Mt. Zion Baptist) and more.
The Rev. Martin Luther King’s famous rebuke rings as loudly now as it did when he said it 57 years ago: "I think it is one of the tragedies of our nations, one of the shameful tragedies,” he said, “that 11 o’clock on Sunday morning is one of the most segregated hours – if not the most segregated hour in Christian America. I definitely think that the Christian church should be integrated and any church that stands against integration and that has a segregated body is standing against the spirit and the teachings of Jesus Christ.”
While we are under no delusion that music alone will overcome all of the obvious and subtle evil of racism, might it not play some kind of role in the breaking down of cultural and relational walls that still divide us? Fifty years ago the evangelical church took some major cultural cues from the contemporary folk music of the day as Jesus Music reflected a spiritual renewal blossoming among millions of young people. That revival saw not only white artists participate, though. Young African American songwriters like Andrae Crouch and Walter Hawkins brought a contemporary sound to Gospel music and contemporary Christian music in those days. Is that conversation happening today?
Twenty-some years ago “modern worship” took the sounds of arena rock and stadium pop into church sanctuaries and college campuses around the world while contemporary Gospel artists like Kirk Franklin, Commissioned, and Mary Mary further impacted the sound of Sunday morning in black churches around the world. But what might happen if Gospel Music and Contemporary Worship Music started to sing along with each other more? What might these two communities learn from each other? How might the church more effectively worship if the music she sang was less segregated?
Come join industry veteran and author John J. Thompson, Associate Dean of Trevecca’s School of Music and Worship Arts, who spent well over a decade in the trenches of both Gospel and modern Worship music as a Creative Director for both Capitol CMG Publishing and eOne Music Nashville where he served a roster of songwriters that included Crouch, John P. Key, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Aaron Lindsey, Tasha Cobbs, Hezekiah Walker, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, and many more, as he discusses this topic with a special group of highly experienced friends. Our special gathering of experts will get the conversation started, but we will be inviting everyone to get involved.
And hopefully, this is just the beginning...

Six Techniques that will improve the vocal sound of your Praise Team
Vocalists on a worship team have an important responsibility to lead the congregation in worship; however, many have had very little vocal training. They desire to be messengers of the Good News with their voices, but often struggle on stage, leaving them feeling inadequate, insecure, and not free. Bottom line, the sound of your vocals won’t improve without using proper techniques in rehearsals.

Confirming the Call to Worship Ministry
This lesson deals with one of the most important issues facing the modern worship leader, Calling. Dr. Vernon Whaley, Dean of the Liberty University School of Music, explains how today’s worship pastor’s ministry includes much more than planning, preparing and presenting songs for worship or leading choir and orchestra performances. The worship leader needs to be firmly committed to "the call of God" in order to consistently accomplish these important tasks.

Prayers of a Community
Prayer refers to a wide variety of interactions in which believers engage with God. The categories of prayer—e.g., confession, petition, intercession, etc.—are so familiar that there is no need to go over them again. But other aspects of prayer emphasized in the Scriptures are less well known. For instance, prayer always occurs within a context—in fact, within a cluster of contexts. To not be aware of the cultural and personal contexts of the worshipers, we may find ourselves singing songs of joy to broken hearts and trying to lead merry hearts in laments.

Identity: More Than What You Can Do
Worship ministry is often about producing: we create, plan, prepare, and do much in our weekly schedules. Much of what our jobs consist of focus on the doing: but our identities can be hijacked by what we do over who we are. How do we differentiate between calling and sonship? This session will look at those functions in the context of worship ministry and how who we are is more than what we do.

Story-telling Worship : The gospel Proclaimed, Enacted, Embodied and Sung
What is the gospel? Why is it important to worship? What is the foundational purpose of music in worship? Led by Jim Hart, President of the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies, we will explore the role of music in serving the scriptural content of Christian worship.
